We all have our body goals, some want to lose weight, some want to tone up and some want to bulk. But finding the motivation to get your backside to the gym and sticking to it can be one of the main reasons why people don't end up achieving their goals. I know that for me, as much as I enjoy training and keeping fit, there are times that I really struggle to get myself going. So, I decided to take some steps to ensure I continue to stay motivated.
Here is a few of my best tips.
1. Get Yourself New Gym Gear- Whether this is a new sports bra, or a pair of brand new Nike trainers; get the gear. I find that having nice gym gear that I really like to wear gets me motivated to go to the gym (okay so maybe I like to show off my new stuff, who doesn't?). I find that going out and buying the gear makes me want to get in that gym and use what I've purchased as I love to wear my new stuff as soon as I get it home, so going to the gym in my new gear just makes sense to me. At top tip when buying gym gear is to make sure it is comfortable. You don't want to wear trainers that are too tight or crop tops that crush your breasts to the point you look like your 12 year old self again (shudder!)
2. Crank Up The Bass- It's common knowledge that hearing a good dance tune makes you want to hit the nightclub and shake those hips, so why not make a playlist full of the kind of music that gets you moving? It can be anything from heavy metal (the angry music might help you train harder) or the songs with the biggest bass that really get you hyped up. Being hyped when you go to the gym is definitely important as it keeps you motivated to push yourself.
3. Take Progress Pictures- I read somewhere (cannot remember where, possibly facebook?) that it can take up to 12 weeks for you to see the progress you are making physically. I can't be sure whether this is true or not. However, I do know that you don't see results straight away (that's right guys, sadly doing only six sit ups won't give you those to die for six packs) and it can take a while to notice any difference in your body. This can cause you to become discouraged. I know the feeling. Taking pictures when you begin training, a month in, two months in etc etc can really help you see the difference in your body from beginning to present. This will help you keep on track!
4. Have A Work Out Routine Ready- Okay, so when you first join the gym you don't really know what you need to do to achieve your goals. Most gyms will offer you a tutorial where they take you around the gym showing you different machines and exercises to help you meet your body goals. If your gym doesn't have this then Youtube is a brilliant tool for learning exercises and machines. Once you know what you're doing, or if you already did, make yourself a routine that you enjoy and that you know you can stick to. I found that before I had my own routine I would just wander around the gym wondering what to do next but now I have my own unique routine I can go to the gym and get on with my workout and make the best of my time there.
5. Change Your Workout Routine- As stated in Tip 4, having a routine prepared is one of the best ways to stay motivated at the gym and keep track of what you're doing, but if you stick to the exact routine every single gym session you will soon get bored and not only that your body will become used to the routine and after a while it will stop doing as much for you as it was in the beginning. My 5th tip is to change it up. Swap the order you do your workouts in, change how long you do each exercise for, do more sets of weights etc etc. Give your body a change so that your muscles are being worked to the best they can. It also keeps it fun.
6. Have A Gym Buddy- It's always good to train with someone else. Training alone is difficult as it's easy to lose track, get bored and give up easier when your body is aching.
There are tons of exercise routines online that you and your gym buddy can do together. Not only does it make the exercises more entertaining as you laugh at each other struggling to do that final squat, it allows you to motivate one another. You can push each other to the limit, force one another to do that last set even though your muscles are shaking. It's a confidence boost.
I hope my tips can help you find the motivation to get your booty on that treadmill and stick to that workout even though it leaves your muscles quivering.
